Machined Castings
Vajra Techno machines grey cast iron, ductile iron and aluminium castings on vertical and horizontal machining centres at Dewas, Madhya Pradesh. Free-issue castings and supply-and-machine orders are both accepted. Finished machined castings are dispatched pan-India.
Which castings are machined?
Pump bodies and covers, gearbox and transmission housings, valve bodies, bearing housings and pillow blocks, compressor housings, motor end shields, machine-tool structural castings, and brackets and carriers in grey iron and ductile iron.
Aluminium castings — gravity die, pressure die and sand — are machined for manifolds, covers and light structural housings. Material groups handled are grey cast iron, ductile iron, aluminium, mild steel and stainless steel 304 and 316.
Do you supply the casting, or machine ours?
Both. On free-issue work you deliver castings to Dewas and we return machined parts against your drawing. On supply-and-machine work we source the casting against your specification and quote a finished machined price.
On supply-and-machine orders the casting is procured against your specification. Where you nominate the foundry, we machine to their casting and your machining drawing, and the casting stays your commercial relationship. Either route is quoted the same way: a finished machined part price, with the casting route stated on the quotation.
What is checked on incoming castings?
Before the first cut we verify machining allowance on every face that will be cut, check for visible porosity, cold shuts and shrinkage in critical areas, and confirm the casting matches the drawing revision on the order.
Castings short of stock, or defective in a face that becomes a sealing or bearing surface, are quarantined and reported rather than machined. This matters on free-issue work: machining a defective casting consumes your material and our setup and produces scrap that neither party wanted.
Hard spots in grey iron are the most common cause of unexpected tool failure and dimensional drift mid-batch. Where a casting lot machines inconsistently, the lot is stopped and reported to you rather than pushed through on degraded tooling. Incoming hardness verification is arranged on request when your drawing or your foundry specification calls for it.
How are castings located and clamped?
The first operation establishes a machined datum face plus two locating holes, unless the drawing specifies as-cast datums. Every subsequent operation locates on those machined features, so positional tolerance is referenced to one datum set instead of accumulating across setups.
Castings with no usable clamping face get a purpose-built fixture. Fixture design, cost and ownership are quoted separately and stated in writing on the quotation. Customer-owned fixtures are accepted and stored against your part number.
Why route casting work horizontally?
Castings usually carry features on several faces. Horizontal machining with fourth-axis indexing machines those faces in one clamp, so face-to-face position is held by the rotary axis rather than by repeated re-fixturing. Chip evacuation on grey iron is also better in the horizontal orientation, which keeps bore finish and tool wear consistent across a batch. Details are on the HMC machining page.
Single-face casting work — cover plates, end shields, flat-faced brackets — is routed to vertical machining instead, where setup is faster and the piece price lower.
What tolerances are held on cast iron?
Bore diameter, machined-face flatness and bore-pattern true position are the three characteristics that decide whether a machined casting assembles. All three are committed against the callout on your drawing at quotation, and assessed per casting rather than published as a blanket figure, because the achievable band depends on casting condition, datum scheme and how many setups the print allows.
Ductile iron is machined to the same process discipline as grey iron, with cutting parameters set for the grade. Send the machining drawing and the casting drawing together and the achievable band on each critical feature is confirmed in writing before you order.
What surface finish is achieved on iron?
Face and bore finish on grey iron are committed against the drawing callout. Sealing faces requiring a finer finish than the milled route delivers are routed to a finishing operation, flagged at quotation stage and priced accordingly — not discovered at first article and argued about afterwards.
How is a machined casting inspected?
First-article inspection covers every dimension on the print with a written report before batch release. Production checks run at agreed frequency on the features marked critical — typically bore diameters, bore centre distances and sealing-face flatness. In-house inspection equipment and what each instrument verifies are listed on the capabilities page.
Pressure testing of machined pump and valve bodies is arranged on request. State the test pressure, medium, hold duration and acceptance criterion on the drawing or the purchase order so the test is quoted against a defined pass condition.
What batch sizes and lead times apply?
Typical batch size and lead time by part family are tabulated on the capabilities page. Prototype and first-off castings are accepted. On repeat schedules with a standing fixture, changeover reduces to a pallet or fixture change and lead time falls accordingly.
How are machined castings packed and shipped?
Machined faces are protected, bores plugged where the drawing requires it, and ferrous parts coated with a rust preventive sized for the transit duration. Dispatch is pan-India by road from Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, on paid or to-pay terms, or through a buyer-nominated transporter.
How do I get castings quoted?
Send the machining drawing, the casting drawing, material grade, batch quantity and whether the casting is free-issue, through the RFQ form or to vajratechnoinc@gmail.com.
